February 12, 2020: The Italian Senate votes to allow prosecutors to put far-right leader Matteo Salvini on trial over charges of holding migrants at sea.
Matteo Salvini is an Italian politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and Minister of the Interior since June 1, 2018 and as a Senator since March 2018.
He’s a Eurosceptic and opposes illegal immigration into Italy and the EU as well as the EU’s management of asylum seekers.
On February 12, 2020 Italy’s upper house Senate voted 152-76 in favor of removing the legal protection (Jupiter) that had shielded him as a former cabinet minister from prosecution.
Magistrates in Sicily can now press charges over his decision to keep 116 migrants blocked aboard a coastguard ship for six days last July as he waited for other European Union states to agree to take them in.
If found guilty Salvini could face up to 15 years in prison, but the potentially career-ending trial could take forever.
He commented: ‘I have chosen against my own interests ... to go to court (Jupiter-house 9) and rely on the impartiality of the judiciary.’
