Her story

Aretha Franklin became The Queen of Soul – the most definitive female soul-singer of the sixties.

She started out singing gospel in her father’s Church – signed with Atlantic records in 1966 – and began to make records that pioneered a new sound in soul music.

I never loved a man (the way I love you), Respect, Chain of fools...over a dozen million-sellers. And then another 20 #1 R&B hits.

In 1985 she roared back with Freeway of Love and some interesting duets...I knew you were waiting (for me) with George Michael.

Eighteen Grammy Awards acknowledged her talent and in 1987 Aretha Franklin became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

On January 20, 2009 Franklin performed at President Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony and in 2010 she accepted an honorary degree from Yale University.

On September 3, 2017 she gave her last full concert at the Ravinia Festival.
