February 2-3: In the US defence officials announce they are tracking a high-altitude surveillance Chinese spy (house 12) balloon (Neptune) over the United States. China confirms the balloon is theirs and apologizes asserting the balloon was merely a civilian airship used for research, mainly meteorological purposes that had strayed into US territory after being blown off course. The balloon changes course demonstrating a capability to maneuver challenging the Chinese assertion. A US official describes the balloon as a clear violation of sovereignty and international law and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken postpones a visit to China scheduled for February 5. An Arctic blast (Saturn) brings dangerously cold (Mars-Saturn) temperatures to swaths of the northeastern United States and Canada.
