August 19, 2026: According to a Department of the Treasury report the US total debt surpasses $40 trillion for the first time in history. The eye watering number got people talking. What did it mean?
Debt is defined as a financial obligation undertaken by a borrower that must be repaid to the lender, usually with an additional payment of interest; and America’s total debt includes money it owes itself; money it owes to American investors – banks (house 2), pensions funds (house 8); and money it owes to foreign countries.
Social security programs hold massive trust funds invested in government bonds (nonspeculative house 2, speculative house 5); and in 2025 the US owed Japan $1.203 trillion, the United Kingdom $889bn and China $683bn.
The debt is felt throughout the US economy and the pocketbooks (house 2) of ordinary Americans.
A major portion of the debt is funded through US Treasury securities which are bought by foreign governments and investors. Despite years of trade tensions and talk of de-dollarization foreign governments and investors hold nearly $9.4 trillion in US Treasury bonds.
A Treasury bond (house 2) is a long-term debt security issued and backed by the US government, offering periodic interest payments and repayment of principal at maturity. It’s one of the safest investments available.
According to expert commentary on the Aquarian Age internet America’s ballooning debt has been raising concerns about a looming fiscal crisis for some time, with economists fearing a toxic combination of heavy borrowing, increased spending and lower taxes could land the world’s biggest economy in crisis.
Crisis spending (Saturn-Jupiter) in response to the 2007-09 recession and the 2020-23 covid-19 pandemic saw US governments engage in intensified borrowing. And tax and other revenues (house 8) are not keeping up with spending (Jupiter) on pension funds (house 8) and healthcare (house 8) for an ageing population.
Experts say Democratic and Republican administrations have failed to rein in spending (Jupiter) or raise taxes (Jupiter) to close this gap.
The US spends about $7 trillion annually, with about 60 percent of that going to Social Security Administration payments, health insurance including Medicare and Medicaid, and veterans’ care.
The US is paying about $1.1 trillion annually in interest to service its debt; and US debt is growing much faster in the 2020s than it did in previous decades.
Total debt has doubled since January 2017, when Donald Trump began his first term as president. It was then $19.95 trillion.
During his first term, public debt rose by $7.8 trillion, most of it in response to the covid-19 pandemic. Since his return to office in January 2025, debt has grown by $3.8 trillion, amounting to a total of $11.6 trillion across his two terms so far.
The fast-rising US debt comes despite Trump’s cost-cutting and efficiency (Saturn) programs involving the nongovernmental Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) which has slashed between 250,000 and 350,000 federal jobs (house 6) and cut global aid (house 12-Saturn) since the start of 2025.
But he’s implemented deep tax cuts (Saturn) for businesses, starting with his Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 during his first term, which slashed the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent. Tax revenue (house 8) fell. He followed that up in 2025 with his ‘One Beautiful Bill Act’, permanently entrenching the 2017 law. At present, individual income taxes (house 8) make up roughly half of federal revenues, compared with only 9 percent from corporate income taxes.
In May 2023, the Congressional Budget Office predicted that the US would reach the $40 trillion debt mark in 2028. But in March 2026 US debt hit $39 trillion and five months later it hit $40 trillion.
The consequences of an unchecked fast rising US debt could see hyperinflation (Neptune), higher interest rates (Jupiter), falling private investment due to safety concerns (Saturn), a slowdown in economic growth (Saturn), painful austerity measures (Saturn) such as higher taxes (house 8) and cutbacks to social safety net programs. And the rest of the world would be affected too.
In America’s chart Jupiter in house 2 (the planet of spending) is conjunction Sun (the president) and sesquisquare Moon – everyday Americans – in house 10 (business); and Sun is square Saturn (falling revenue) – the cusp ruler of house 8 (taxes) in house 5 (speculative bonds).
In November 2006 progressed Jupiter (excess spending) in house 2 moved to form a square (obstacle) aspect with birth chart Saturn – the cusp ruler of house 8 (tax revenues) in house 5. (Jupiter was retrograde and in February 2026 it turned direct at 15 Cancer 10.) So, for the past 20 years house 2 and house 8 have been under severe discord and stress.
Since December 2006 progressed Saturn – the cusp ruler of houses 8 (tax revenue) and 10 (business activity) in house 6 (labor and employment) – has been trine (luck) birth chart Venus in house 2; and this very fortunate aspect affecting business and workers peaks in October 2033.
But since April 2022 progressed Sun parallel birth chart Neptune and progressed Mars parallel progressed Neptune have fueled inflation and on October 30, 2026 progressed Sun opposition birth chart Neptune (the planet of hyperinflation) starts > peaks November 2027. And three months later on February 5, 2027 progressed Mars (planet of manufacturing, war and construction) in house 5 square birth chart Jupiter (excess spending) in house 2 starts > peaks August 2030.
