October 9, 2025: Donald Trump announces that Israel and Hamas have agreed on the first phase of a 20-point peace plan that aims to end the war in Gaza with the release of Israeli captives and Palestinian prisoners.

In January 2026 the peace plan is broadly holding, despite sporadic clashes between the Israel Defense Forces and Gaza militants. However, both sides are dragging their feet on moving on to the next crucial phase of the ceasefire. Palestinians in the territory are left to deal with the muck and deadly cold of winter. Meaningful progress seems unlikely soon.

The Russia-Ukraine war goes on with Russia firing drones and missiles. At the same time America mediates attempting to bring about a cease fire but whether the warring parties can have a successful pow wow and pass the peace pipe remains to be seen.

December 22, 2025: Donald Trump names Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland the Danish autonomous territory he wants and angers Denmark.

Greenland, home to about 57,000 people, has had extensive self-government since 1979, though defence and foreign policy remain in Danish hands. While most Greenlanders favour eventual independence from Denmark, opinion polls show overwhelming opposition to becoming part of the US.

In December 2025, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (Pluto) announced a significant expansion of his country’s missile and artillery production indicating a move towards increased output of both nuclear and conventional weapons.

Increased tensions over Taiwan and a major cyber-attack can’t be discounted.
