Birth chart aspects

The aspects formed by the planets in astrology define the nature of the events they map.

A conjunction aspect is formed when two planets are approximately in the same degree of the zodiac. Its nature is neutral, but variable and the aspect’s keyword – prominence – defines the outstanding feature of a very noticeable character trait and event. This aspect marks for concentrated energy that brings things together in a very conspicuous manner.

A semisextile aspect is formed when two planets are approximately 30° apart in the zodiac. Its nature is harmonious and the aspect’s keyword – growth – defines the distinguishing feature of a favorable event or circumstance. This aspect favors growth and development.

A semisquare aspect is formed when two planets are approximately 45° apart in the zodiac. Its nature is discordant and the aspect’s keyword – friction – defines the key feature of an annoying event or circumstance. This aspect is a minor stressor. It marks for a friction event involving displeasure, criticism, anxiety, uncertainty and indecision.

A sextile aspect is formed when two planets are approximately 60° apart in the zodiac. Its nature is harmonious and the aspects keyword – opportunity – defines the chief characteristic of a fortunate event or circumstance. This aspect favors advantages, openings, favorable circumstances and easy adaptation to environment.

A square aspect is formed when two planets are approximately 90° apart in the zodiac. Its nature is discordant and the aspect’s keyword – obstacle – defines the outstanding feature of a very frustrating event or circumstance. This aspect is a major stressor. (Trine aspects in your birthchart are your ace cards.)

A sesquisquare aspect is formed when two planets are approximately 135° apart in the zodiac. Its nature is discordant and the aspect’s keyword – agitation – defines the chief characteristic of a sudden, disruptive disturbance. This aspect is a minor stressor. It marks for a recurring disruption that causes irritation and discontentment and the breaking up of existing conditions.

An opposition aspect is formed when two planets are approximately 180° apart in the zodiac. Its nature is discordant and the aspect’s keyword – separation – defines the outstanding feature of a very painful break-up event. This aspect is a major stressor. It marks for disengagement, estrangement, a severance of ties and unrelenting mental conflict that tears you up.

A parallel aspect is formed when two planets are in the same degree of dec-lination – either south-south, north-north or south-north of the celestial equator. Its nature is neutral, but variable and the aspect’s keyword – intensity – defines the chief characteristic of the driving force and the events it desires. This aspect marks for a high concentration of energy, but it’s imprecise, difficult to focus and easily swayed and diverted. (We don’t segregate parallels and contra-parallels. Their influence is the same.)
