Evolution is all about life and Wikipedia defines life as matter that exhibits biological processes and characteristics such as homeostasis, organization, metabolism, growth, adaption, response to stimuli and reproduction. It comprises individuals or living beings made up of cells, capable of metabolism and reproduction.
Life is often described as a self-sustaining chemical system that can undergo biological evolution.
Philosophers have long debated whether life has inherent meaning and purpose and the world’s ancient religions provide various perspectives on this matter.
How life initially emerged arouses scientific curiosity and there are around 20 theories; but the process by which species change over generations through mechanisms like natural selection, leading to the diversity of life on Earth aka Darwin’s theory of evolution, is almost universally accepted.
But the big-bang model of the emergence of the universe and evolutionary theory are rejected by creationism which is the belief that the universe and the various forms of life were created by God out of nothing.
Creationism is largely associated with conservative or fundamentalist branches of Protestant Christianity but there is Jewish and Islamic creationism as well as adherents in other branches of Christianity.
The role of genes as the fundamental blueprints for life, guiding the physical development and functioning of every living organism is universally accepted. It seems to have no faults or credible alternatives. Life has one purpose and that’s to pass on its genes to ensure the perpetuation of the species.
The mechanist biologist explains all the actions and functions of life in terms of physics and chemistry. Life can be explained by the same laws that govern the non-living. This thinking machine proclaims: If very complex chemical molecules can operate in humans to make them intelligent, then equally complex electrical circuits can make computers intelligent in a similar way.
An alternative explanation to their mechanistic view of life is vitalism.
It’s the theory that the origin and phenomena of life are dependent on a force or principle distinct from purely chemical or physical forces and postulates the presence of a vital principle, an élan vital, as the difference between living and non-living material. It proposes that living material, be it plant or animal cell, contains a vital principle, an immaterial entity which distinguishes it from inanimate (dead) matter.
Hermetic astrology teaches that this vital force that’s needed to animate, and give life to a physical cell is a stellar (astral) cell. But the soul that now organizes and builds the human body did not acquire this ability instantly. Its extraordinary organizing and building skills have been learned and acquired over a long training program.
Evolution is a progressive process that moves from the simple to the complex.
Material life and astral life progress from the simple to the complex, and a soul that animates a particular life-form does so because it has developed the astral intelligence aka life-skills to do it.
Simple life-skills can animate simple-life forms and exceptional life-skills are required to animate the extraordinary human body. The distinguishing feature of the human nervous system is its complexity.
The soul of a tiger has developed certain skills. It has reached a certain level of development. As a tiger it has experiences with hunting food (house 6) energetic activity (Mars), fighting enemies (Mars and house 7), mating and sex (Mars and house 5) and raising baby tigers (Moon and house 5).
It climbs trees for protection (Saturn), plays (Venus), communicates (Mercury) and struggles to stay alive (Sun). And its soul saves in memory all the states of consciousness associated with these experiences.
They provide it with the intelligence and ability to organize and build a slightly more advanced life-form.
Step by step, up Jacob’s ladder, a soul’s intelligence and ability purposefully develop; and at each stage of its journey, they allow it to animate a form whose complexity matches its acquired ability.
The evolution of your soul’s intelligence
Evolution implies progress and continuity – an increase in powers, skills and abilities and the development of new states of consciousness.
More complex skills could only be developed when your soul had acquired sufficient ability to learn them; and the development of ability always led to the development of greater ability.
So, the evolution of your soul’s intelligence and ability followed a definite plan that involved the astral and physical environments.
When your soul was first differentiated in the highest state of the spiritual realm it possessed neither consciousness nor feeling. It was equipped with the will to live (the astrological Sun) and the potential, through experience, to develop abilities and new states of consciousness.
It then involved down from the spiritual acquiring the necessary energy (love power) to attract about itself a physical form. Its first objective experience was in the mineral.
It then evolved, step by step, through the various kinds of mineral life. From the highest mineral form, your soul was carried into the astral zone where it underwent a period of subjective life.
It was then carried forward on the life wave and became incarnated in the vegetable kingdom. Vegetable life provided the opportunity to develop a more complex expression and from the highest type of plant life your soul again moved to the astral where it experienced a period of subjective gestation.
Your soul through attraction, or love, then incarnated in the lowest form of animal life. Then having exhausted the realms of animal life it underwent another period of subjective assimilation in the astral spheres.
Your soul was now ready to experience human life, where for the first time it would attain self-consciousness and recapitulate in a single life all the various states through which it has passed.
It is no longer an impersonal being impelled by unaccountable yearnings. The whole purpose of human life is to provide self-consciousness and after one human incarnation your self-conscious soul moves to the astral where it continues its evolution in a realm which ensures the further growth and development of its consciousness.
Your soul has the ability to capture and store states of consciousness and its innate desire to experience life keeps driving you forward ensuring the continual development of your intelligence and ability.
When it was born a human soul, its acquired intelligence and ability was depicted in your birth chart as a unique pattern of astrological energies.
Your chart maps your soul’s accumulated experiences in the business of survival at the human stage of its evolutionary journey. It indicates what your soul has so far accomplished in the expansion of consciousness.
