Kevin Owen McCarthy was born in Bakersfield, California. His mother was a home maker and his father an assistant fire chief. He is the first Republican in his immediate family – his parents were members of the Democratic Party.
McCarthy attended California State University, Bakersfield, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in marketing in 1989 and a Master of Business Administration in 1994.
In 1995, he chaired the California Young Republicans and from 1999 to 2002 chaired the Young Republican National Federation.
McCarthy was elected to the California State Assembly in 2002 and was elected to the United States Congress in 2006.
He has served as the U.S. representative for California’s 22nd congressional district from 2007 to 2013 and for the 23rd district since 2013; and as House Majority Leader from 2014 to 2019.
On November 19, 2021 he talked (Mercury – the cosmic chatterbox – is his dominant planet) for 8 hours and 32 minutes setting a record for the longest continuous speech (Sun is in house 9) in modern history – his claim to fame (Sun).
