Hermetic Astrology fact-check

There are several websites that claim to present Hermetic Astrology. But combining an ancient philosophy with some new-age astrological beliefs doesn’t allow its originator to call the end result Hermetic Astrology. So here’s a fact-check on The Hermetic System of Astrology.

The Hermetic System of Astrology is the system of astrology used by The Brotherhood of Light. It’s a group whose members study, investigate and research astrology. The system only employs astrological markers and rules that have been thoroughly investigated and scientifically proven.

The basics of Hermetic Astrology were first presented by T H Burgoyne in his extraordinary 1889 publication Light of Egypt. Then in 1900 Elbert Benjamine – a young man of 17 – acquired a copy and began to teach himself astrology.

The Age of Aquarius had commenced in 1881 and this intellectual age demanded a new evidence-based scientific astrology and in 1910 Elbert Benjamine gave his promise to present the ancient Hermetic teachings including The Hermetic System of Astrology in a culturally relevant format. The world had changed a great deal since Hermes Trismegistus presented the ancient teachings, although his mighty axiom ‘As Above – So Below’ is a truth that never changes.

Between 1910 and 1914 Elbert Benjamine developed The Hermetic System of Astrology and in 1915 he moved to Los Angeles and began to teach it. It was first published under the auspices of The Brotherhood of Light in 1922 as Natal Astrology (Hermetic System).

In April 1924 The Brotherhood of Light Astrological Research Department was established to study and scientifically investigate birthcharts for the express purpose of finding the facts of astrology. Elbert Benjamine had attended Iowa State University where he became a professor of physics and over the next ten years his scientific thinking caused The Hermetic System of Astrology to evolve and change. Factors that were found to be scientifically unsound were eliminated and newly discovered facts were introduced.

In 1936 Elbert Benjamine writing as CC Zain presented and explained The Hermetic System of Astrology in Brotherhood of Light Course 10 – Delineating the Horoscope. And, at the same time, he presented The Hermetic System of Progressions in which he explained how your life unfolds in accordance with three astrological timing mechanisms called major progressions, minor progressions and transit progressions.

Between 1936 and 1946 The Hermetic System of Astrology continued to evolve as more astrological discoveries were made and in 1946, after 8 years of investigation, Elbert Benjamine and WMA Drake developed a measuring system that could be employed to measure the power, harmony and discord of each planet, aspect, sign and house in any birthchart. Known as Astrodynes this capacity to measure astral force was one of the greatest developments in astrological science and is unique to The Hermetic System.

The Hermetic System of Astrology is a Standard System that uses the 10 planets, the 12 zodiac signs, the 10 most common aspects and the 12 houses in the birthchart. It claims that a chart that’s calculated and constructed for your precise time and place of birth displays your character and ability-development up to that time and the life experience that will sustain your development unless you change what’s indicated. The system as it currently stands employs and uses astrological markers and rules that have been scientifically validated and changes will only occur if new scientific research reveals they are scientifically unsound.
