The quantified self

The quantified self in the age of DNA and genes refers to the measurement of your physical self and behaviors. Your height, weight and foot size can be measured and now, using the latest app and sensory device, you can measure your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, sugar levels, heart rate variability, food intake, sleep time and moods. And these personal measurements represent your quantified self.  But your physical self is only half the story. You can say with confidence that you have two selves – your physical self and your mental self.

Your physical self is a biological marvel and you may identify who you are with your body and its physical features. It’s where you live and it’s the only human body you will ever have.  It won’t be perfect and you may have complaints, but you should treat it with care and loving respect.  And your brain is the means by which you experience self-conscious awareness.  It allows you to experience your mental self and your mental self is a fantastic array of thoughts, feelings, impulses, desires, moods, aspirations, likes and dislikes.

Your mind or mental self is divided into two parts. You have a conscious mental world and a not-conscious mental world. Your conscious mind includes you – the witness who’s observing what’s going on – and all the states of consciousness you experience.  And all your conscious mental activity originates in your not-conscious soul-mind.  It’s a great reservoir of thoughts, feelings and impulses and the conscious thoughts you experience are mental downloads from the hard disk to the screen of consciousness.  But objective awareness doesn’t have access to your not-conscious mental world.

So you have the problem of working out how each piece of your mental self fits into a single unified consciousness. How is your mind put together? How is it constructed?  And then there’s the question of how it can be looked at and observed.  And the bigger question of how dynamic states of consciousness can be measured.  And your birthchart solves the problem.  As a mathematical model of your character and life experience it provides you with a detailed description of your thought and feeling world.  And the power and functionality of the urges, traits and impulses that comprise your psychological landscape can be measured.  The measurements, of course, are subjective because only you know the amount of confidence, joy, security, fear, anger, pride, caring, idealism, hope, self-worth and discontentment you feel and experience.

Your birthchart quantifies your mind or character and the application of the astrodynes provides you with a set of numbers that represent your quantified self. So you need your chart to measure and grade the relative strength and functionality of your character and its component parts.  The chart – you see – is a self-data generator.

The core you is a set of character traits, behaviors, attributes and skills. They’re the physical, mental and emotional resources that you’ve got to live and work with.  You have abilities, likes, dislikes, interests, preferred activities, mental pursuits, emotional preoccupations, hobbies and a natural gift, talent, flair or forte.  And your birthchart allows you to know your mind.  As a personal resource it allows you learn about your thought and feeling world.

Your current mental activity is an assortment of thoughts, feelings and impulses. It’s a mental download from your not-conscious mind in response to a sensory input that is chiefly concerned with what’s happening now or a problem or conflict that has arisen between you and your environment. And Hermetic astrology is inviting you to quantify the situation. It’s inviting you to measure your character and all its component parts and it will help you crunch the numbers and get meaning out of the data provided by your chart.

As the thinker you may see yourself as the navigator of life’s vagaries, the solver of problems, the decision-maker, the agent who’s responsible for the satisfaction of your desires, the pleasure seeker or the person who’s in charge of keeping your pursuit of happiness, health, wealth and success on track and moving forward. So having access to your birthchart and your quantified self will make your job a whole lot easier.  Information like this allows you to know what you have to do to take control of your life, health and happiness.  It allows you to live your life your way.
